In a book entitled “The Library of Babel,” Luis Borges suggests that the universe is the Library and the Library constitutes the whole university. The title of this book, “What They Thought! What They Think!” is a consequence of that thought. Thomas Jefferson said that he “expected libraries to be useful to him.“ but there are so many books, and we have only so much time.

The writings in this book note the words of many writers, but provide snippets of their thoughts that will enable the reader to consider what they have written, and think through the implications of their words for them.“No one doubts that reading – even if it cannot make a person good – can make them better.“

C.S. Lewis reflects, “In reading I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem, I see with myriad eyes, but it is still I see.” Reading is a grand adventure.
